We tested out our fact-checking tools on the following piece of fake news (see image below).

1 - Snopes.com - Found something close

  • Rated it "false"
  • Found by searching "autism" and "vaccine*"
  • Linked to authoritative articles
  • Also discussed how vaccines handouts explain side effects

2 - Politifact.com

  • Rated it "false"
  • Searched for "autism" and "vaccine"
  • Found the exact image!
  • Consulted experts and linked to research

3 - Factcheck.org

  • Said autism diagnoses increasing, but no connection to autism
  • Searched on "autism" and "vaccine"
  • In-depth look at how autism is diagnosed
  • On the "SciCheck" portion of the site

4 - Wikipedia

  • Cited information contrary to information on image
  • Searched "autism" and "vaccines"; was redirected to proper sub-portion of article (that is, did not have an article just on autism and vaccines)
  • Gave several in-text citations including a meta-analysis from 2014
