Government Information Resources

Why Government Information?

Relevant. Government information sources address virtually every topic for which the government has an interest. Historical resources provide context for understanding the past; current resources often provide up-to-the-minute information.

Reliable. These resources include statistical information, laws and regulations, research studies, expert opinions, and advice that is produced with the highest standards. Many government documents are primary sources for research.

Responsible. As participants in a democracy, we have the responsibility to be informed citizens. Government resources help us understand the decisions our elected officials make on a daily basis.

Getting Started with Government Information

Government information resources are valuable research and teaching tools that can be used to understand the world around us. They help us understand United States governance and history, public policy, the social sciences, technology and the natural sciences, agriculture and the environment, and the people who live here.

University Libraries can help you locate information and publications from:

  • the Federal government;
  • the State of Ohio;
  • local governments, including cities and counties;
  • other political entities; and
  • international governmental organizations.

We can also help you find statistics that are collected and disseminated by government agencies.

As a participant in the Federal Depository Library Program, Bierce Library serves the students, faculty, and staff of The University of Akron, residents of the surrounding communities, and the general public.
