Plan Ahead

Plan Ahead and Start Early

  • You may need to view your film more than once.

    • View your film early in the semester, keeping in mind that Humanities  videos must be returned in five days.

    • If your film is checked out, check with the library staff to see if another library has a copy of your film.

    • Check YouTube: Your assigned movie may be available online.

  • You may need to request materials.

    • Request materials from other libraries using The University of Akron Libraries or OhioLINK catalogs.

    • Most materials arrive within 5 working days, but plan to leave extra time for your materials to arrive.

Researching Your Topic

While you are watching your film keep in mind the themes listed on your film project assignment sheet given to you by your professor.

Here are some suggestions:

Prepare your paper first by coming up with a topic, developing a thesis and creating an argument.

  • Research the battle scenes and weaponry
  • Research the costumes of the characters and the dress of different classes
  • Research the role of the family and women in your time period
  • Research  the historical accuracy of the characters
  • Research major events depicted in the film
  • Research the cultural norms and customs
  • Research the religious customs and observances
  • Research the laws of the time period
  • Research the historical time period of your film
  • Locate primary sources: There is no better way to understand events in the past than by examining the sources (journals, newspaper articles, letters, court case records, novels, artworks, music or autobiographies) that people from that period left behind.
  • Don't forget to cite your sources.
