VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a way to connect to the UA network and access library resources from off-campus (and other campus network resources like H: drives) and acts as if you were on campus. It requires the user to download and configure the VPN client software on his/her personal device. The instructions for various devices and operating systems can be found below.
Don’t know your operating system? - If you are unsure of which Microsoft Windows operating system you are running visit the Identify Operating System article.
OhioLINK Remote Authentication is another alternative method to access library electronic resources remotely, but has two distinct differences.
Unlike the EZ-Proxy and VPN methods that authenticate users to all of the libraries' subscribed and licensed content, OhioLINK Remote Authentication grants access to only those resources available to The University of Akron Libraries through the OhioLINK consortium. Local subscriptions, like JSTOR and Philosopher's Index, are not accessible through this method.
EZ-Proxy and VPN both use UAnet ID and password to authenticate the user. OhioLINK Remote Authentication uses a different process and credentials to authenticate users. Although the credentials used are not UAnet ID and password, but rather your LastName FirstName and the barcode number on the back of yout UA Zip Card.
Navigate to the OhioLINK resources: https://databases.ohiolink.edu/ and if prompted select The University of Akron as your institution.
