University of Akron Interlibrary Loan

Welcome to Interlibrary Loan, a free service for all students, staff, and faculty requesting resources from other libraries.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is available when searches through the UA Libraries catalog, OhioLINK, or Search Ohio provide no results due to materials being not owned, checked out, lost, or missing. Requests may be cancelled if they are available locally or if they cannot be supplied by other libraries.

Interlibrary Loan is a free service for all students, staff, and faculty engaging in research of book titles, journal articles, theses and dissertations. As part of our Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service, we borrow materials that are not available - checked out, lost or missing - in the UA Libraries catalogOhioLINK, or Search Ohio.

Frequently Asked Questions for ILL

How do I log in?

Click on the login URL to access your Interlibrary Loan account. You will be asked to confirm your UANet credentials, then directed over to your ILL account. 

In your ILL account you will be able to make a new request, review past requests, and review your communication preferences.

Under communication preferences you can add a phone number to receive text updates in addition to email updates. UL recommends that you have at least email updates turned on to receive the best service.

Who can use Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan is reserved for students, staff, and faculty affiliated with University of Akron. An active UANet ID is required for ILL services. No services are currently being offered to corporate affiliates.

How do I make a request?

New requests may be made through the ILL account. Certain databases may also permit you to generate a new ILL request at a click. 

Users may select Article, Book, or Book Chapter as a request type. Users who select Article or Book Chapter will receive successful fulfillment as a PDF. Users who select Book will physical loan that must be picked up at the Bierce or S&T Libraries. 

How long will it take for me to get my request?

Since results vary depending on factors outside of our control, we do not have a standard timeline for Interlibrary Loan. If you have questions about a specific request, please contact ill@uakron.edu with your Request ID number.

Why was my request canceled?

A request may be canceled for various reasons:

  • The requested item is available through University Libraries
  • The requested item is available through OhioLINK or Search Ohio
  • No libraries own the item 
  • No libraries are able to share the item
  • The fees for borrowing the item are too high

Where do I pick up my ILL request?

ILL are available for pickup at either the Bierce Library or the Science and Tech Library. Students will need to provide some form of ID to check out the book. 

ILL Users will now see ILL holds and ILL checkouts through their MyLibrary account, in addition to their ILL Account

What if I am a patron of the Law Library?

Students associated with the Law Library should refer to the ILL services provided for those particular branches. 

What are the fees for being late with an checked out ILL item?

Overdue fines are 50 cents per day.

After about three days being overdue the loan will become Billed and show a replacement cost of $180. Returning the book will drop the fine down to $100.

If a loan is checked out and not returned, the user will be expected to pay the $180 replacement cost of the book.

Can I renew my ILL item?

Lending libraries get to decide whether renewals are possible. Please contact ill@uakron.edu or call 330-972-6275 to see if renewals are possible. Asking to renew a loan does not guarantee an extension, so plan accordingly. 

Can Instructors add their ILL PDFs to their Brightspace page for their students to use?

No. Users of Interlibrary Loan Services are required to follow Copyright laws.Obtaining a PDF through ILL permits only personal study, scholarship, or research. Therefore, ILL PDFs should not be distributed or copied.

Instructors who are interested in uploading PDFs to Brightspace should make a formal request through Bierce Library's Course Reserves. Making a formal request will ensure copyright standards are followed.

Can I share my ILL account with my partner or friend?

All accounts obtained through University of Akron are intended to be private. Never share your password with anyone. 

However, if you want a student assistant or a friend to pick up your library materials on your behalf, we can set up another user as a proxy account who will be able to have verified access to your library account. Without first obtaining a proxy account, you may not know what is on another library account, nor can you retrieve items.

When you make an interlibrary loan request you agree to abide by United States copyright law as dictated in Title 17, United States Code, which governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research. If a users makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of fair use that user may be liable for copyright infringement.
