What to Expect at the Libraries: Fall 2020

Bierce Library is open.

The University Libraries has modified services and hours for the Fall 2020 semester. View Hours →

Bierce Library is open and Archives will open by appointment. The Science & Technology Library will not reopen for the fall or spring.

Access may be limited to UA students, faculty, and staff, and university affiliates with a Zipcard, including community patron cards.

Our schedule is subject to change. Please check this page for ongoing updates.

Modified hours:

Updated November 16 (Bierce) through December 11:
  Monday- Thursday: 8am-9pm
  Friday: 8am- 5pm
  Saturday/Sunday: 12pm-6pm

Update 12/4: Bierce Library will remain open for individual use of computer workstations, printers, study rooms, and library resources. Group study will not be permitted at this time. New check-in procedures in the lobby will be established to protect students and maintain sanitized spaces.

Service desk locations have changed at Bierce Library.

We've reconfigured and consolidated service points to minimize contact- there is one Service Desk where the User Support Services/Reference desk was further back in the lobby.

In the old Circulation desk area there is now a study/lounge space we've named the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) Lounge with furnishings and artwork from the Science & Technology Library.

IT has moved back into the Computer Center so there is no longer Help Desk (now virtual) or computer repair services in the building. They can be reached:

Everyone is required to wear a face covering at the Libraries.

Beginning on July 1, and at least through the fall 2020 semester, students, faculty, staff and university affiliates are required to wear face coverings in all buildings and in all university programs held in non-university buildings. Face coverings are also required in outdoor spaces on campus property where appropriate physical distancing cannot be guaranteed.

See the university’s Return to Campus website for more details on policies and procedures to help ensure health and safety during this time.

You will be able to borrow laptops, chargers, and calculators in person.

When our buildings are open, laptops, chargers, calculators, and connectors/adapters will be available to borrow at the Bierce Library Service Desk. We will also give away free disposable earbuds.

Laptops are now available to be checked out for the entire semester and socially distanced desktop computers are available for use in our building. We'll be checking out keyboards for the desktop computers- this allows us to sanitize keyboards AND workstations in between uses.

Other teaching technology for faculty will only be available via online request.

You can still get items curbside or mailed to your home.

We've expanded our services for patrons who do not want to or can't enter our buildings.

UA faculty, staff, and students can request Akron-owned library materials online and retrieve them by a Curbside Service appointment from Bierce Library or have them mailed to your home address. Requestable material includes Bierce and Science & Technology Libraries’ general collections, Test Prep, Curriculum Center, and Media.

You will receive a direct email about these retrieval procedures.

You will be able to reserve individual study rooms beginning August 24.

Update 12/4: We’ve converted our group study rooms into individual study rooms that you will be able to reserve online for individual study only. Group study will not be permitted at this time. Unreserved study rooms are first come first serve.

Some spaces will not be available, but you can still get help from specialists.

The MakerStudio, Science & Technology Library, and other specialized library spaces will not be open, but you can still get help from specialists over email or by appointment.
