Dear Accessibility Liaisons,

At the end of every Owner’s Manual, (remember those?) there was usually a troubleshooting section; it listed common issues and what to do about them. Hopefully, your semester is going well, so there’s no need to troubleshoot, but just in case, here are some helpful tips:

  • The behavioral expectations for students with disabilities are the same as any other student in your class. Please handle any issues the same as you would handle them with any other student.  Feel free to reach out to the student’s Disability Specialist to discuss any concerns.

  • Students are not entitled to invoke their accommodations until they speak to you about them.  They must inform you in advance if they need to use attendance or assignment accommodation.  Since accommodations are not retroactive, if students do not inform you in advance, then you are not expected to provide the accommodation.  If you feel a student is abusing an accommodation, please notify their Disability Specialist.

  • By law, accommodations cannot interfere with the essential components of a course or program.  Students are told in their intake session that you are aware of the essential components of your course and that you will let them know if their accommodation interferes with these components. Please feel free to reach out to the Office of Accessibility if you believe an accommodation interferes with an essential component of your course or program so that we can work together to address the student’s need while maintaining the integrity of the course.

If you have any questions or need more specific information, contact the accessibility office or reach out to the student's Disability Specialist (found on their accommodation letter). Please fill out this survey to let us know how helpful you find this information and what else you would want included. See other Accessibility Liaison Communication.

Thank you for working with the office of Accessibility to provide students with disabilities with equal access to a quality education.

Regards,
Accessibility Committee
