SEL Framework

Searching Tips

Brainstorm the SEL terms you're targeting:

Think of the emotions, abilities, or traits you want to see demonstrated in the book:

  • honesty
  • gratitude
  • self esteem
  • creative thinking
  • helping behavior
  • cooperation
  • toleration / tolerance
  • individual differences

Include search strategies that focus on children's literature:

  • Juvenile literature (nonfiction)
  • Juvenile fiction (fiction)

Search

Search the UA Libraries Catalog, the OhioLINK Catalog, or the SearchOhio Catalog using a variety of keyword search strategies.

Examples:

Join the SEL concept with the terms "juvenile literature" or "juvenile fiction," connecting your terms with the Boolean operator "AND":

  • friendship AND juvenile fiction
  • kindness AND juvenile fiction
  • empathy AND juvenile fiction
  • curiosity AND juvenile fiction
  • fear AND courage AND juvenile fiction

If you want to include both fiction and nonfiction children's books in your results, join the terms "juvenile literature" and "juvenile fiction" with the Boolean operator OR, enclosing these terms inside parentheses:

  • resilience AND (juvenile literature OR juvenile fiction)

Many of the book records include recommended age ranges.
