Instructions: Searching for Research Articles in PubMed

1. Go to PubMed and click on the MeSH Database.

2. Type name of the disease you’re studying into the search box, and hit Search

3. Select the most relevant option (i.e., make one selection) from the search results listed and click on the hyperlinked name of the disease.  Tip: Read the definitions to help in your selection.

4. Review the subheadings (e.g., therapy, psychology) provided.  Then, select one or more subheadings to limit your search to particular aspects of the disease.

Note: the subheadings may not be the same for every search topic. See definitions of subheadings here.
Select these recommended subheadings (when available): complications, diagnosis, therapy, nursing, physiopathology, or/and physiology. Refer to image below.

5. Check the box for Restrict to MeSH Major Topic, to restrict your results to articles where your disease is the main point of the article.

6. Under the PubMed Search Builder box at the top right of the page, click Add to search builder and then click Search PubMed.  The result list will appear, with the most recently published articles listed first. See image below.

7. Consider using the filters on the left side of the Results page to refine search results. Try limiting results by applying these filters: English, Humans, and the last 5 years.

8. Remember to email yourself the citations.
