Information on the University Libraries various open access publishing deals and how to use them

Glossary

  • Affiliation: Confirming association with University of Akron either by having an "@uakron.edu" email or by having a librarian confirming status.
  • Article Processing Charge (APC): The fee charged to the author(s) of an open access article
  • Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM): A manuscript that has been approved for publication, before formatting for the journal.
  • Corresponding Author: The person who handles the manuscript and correspondence during the publication process. Important Note: The corresponding author's university affiliation that determines if an article qualifies for a Read and Publish Deal.
  • Creative Common License: An open access license that enables free distribution of an otherwise copyrighted work. Articles published as open access through University Libraries deals are most often granted CC BY licenses.
  • Gold Open Access Journal: Open access where the article processing charge is paid for by the author (if not part of a University Libraries publishing deal). These articles are then available to the public without cost.
  • Green Open Access: Refers to when an article only has the preprint available as open access, and the version of record is still behind a paywall.
  • Hybrid Open Access Journal: A journal that publishes traditional and open access articles; therefore, access to some articles in a hybrid journal requires a subscription.
  • Open Source: The code for open source software is available to view and may be sharable and adaptable depending on licensing terms.
  • Open Access (OA): A work that is available to view, and may be sharable and adaptable depending on licensing terms.
  • Open Education: Educational materials created from open access sources and provided to the public without barrier.
  • Open Scholarship / Science: The idea that scholarly information should be made available to researchers and to the public with fewer restrictions.
  • Postprint: Another term for Author Accepted Manuscript.
  • Predatory Publishers: An organization that creates a fake journal in order to take advantage of the OA APC model and does not provide competent peer review or editorial services.
  • Preprint: A manuscript submitted to a journal before before approval and peer review.
  • Read and Publish Deal: Allows users to access subscribed journals as well as waiving the article processing fee in some or all of the publisher's journals.
  • Transformative Agreement: An umbrella term that includes "Read and Publish" deals.
  • Version of Record: The final published version of an article. DOI will be assigned to this version.
