The Fireside Readers will meet on Monday, February 24th at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room to discuss Fever in the Heartland by Timothy Egan.
"Timothy Egan’s A Fever in the Heartland: The Ku Klux Klan’s Plot to Take Over America, and the Woman Who Stopped Them (2023) is a historical account of the Klan’s brief but meteoric
resurrection in Indiana in the 1920s. Using meticulous research combined with the descriptive elements of narrative thrillers, Egan recreates in detail a particularly dark chapter in American history. Egan focuses on David C. Stephenson, a grifter and conman who exploited the fears and racism of middle America to build an empire with himself as king, as well as Madge Oberholtzer, the woman who ultimately stopped him. Egan, a reporter for The New York Times, won a Pulitzer Prize in 2001 for his reporting on race in America. He is the author of nine previous books including The Worst Hard Time (2005), The Big Burn: Teddy
Roosevelt and the Fire that Saved America (2009), and The Candy House (2022)" From: A fever in the Heartland Summary and Study Guide.
The Fireside Readers Book Discussion Group was formed in October 2005. Discussions are open to members of the area community, as well as college students, faculty and staff. Over the past few years we have focused on discussing memoirs, biographies, and other works of nonfiction. Several members of the group have been with us since the beginning, and others join us when we're reading a book of personal interest.
The group traditionally meets on the fourth Monday of the month, taking time off over the winter holidays. Light refreshments are served. Please join us for an upcoming meeting, even if you have not yet read or completely the month's selection. New members and guests are always welcome!
Our newest Loud in the Library event will be held on Monday, March 3, 2025 at 6:30 p.m.
This brand new experience is open exclusively to current UA and UA Wayne College students. Don't miss this opportunity to meet other students on campus and possibly find your new best friend!
Chances are, there are other students on campus who share your major or enjoy some of the same hobbies as you do.
Here's how Speed Friending works:
This program is modeled after popular speed dating events. We will have several guided speed rounds allowing everyone a few minutes to get acquainted. This will be followed by time to talk more with the people you met. We'll include suggestions on how to move forward making plans with your new friends. And there will be lots of snacks!
RSVPs are strongly encouraged (but not required) for planning purposes. Please email Maureen at mlerch@uakron.edu to let us know you're planning to come!
