Locating an Author's Credentials

An author's educational credentials (e.g. RN, BSN, or MSN, PhD) can may appear in various places depending on the journal. Places that credentials can be found include, but are not limited to:

  • after the author's name on the title page,
  • in the footnotes of the first page,
  • in another block of information that describes the affiliation of the authors usually on the first page, or
  • on the last page before the references.

Credentials for Nurses

Educational credentials that may follow a nurse’s name:

  • Doctoral degrees: PhDDrPH, EdD, DNS, and DNP
  • Master's degrees: MSN (Master's Degree in Nursing)
  • Bachelor's degrees BSN (Bachelor's Degree in Nursing)

Nurse licensing credentials:

  • RN (Registered Nurse)
  • APRN (Advanced Practice Registered Nurse) and types of APRN roles:
    • Nurse Practitioners (NP)
    • Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS)
    • Certified Nurse-midwives (CNM)
    • Certified Nurse Anesthetists (CNA)

Some specialized RN credentials:

  • RN-BC (Registered Nurse-Board Certified)
  • CPN (Certified Pediatric Nurse)
  • TCRN (Trauma Certified Registered Nurse)
  • CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse)
  • CWCN (Certified Wound Care Nurse)
  • CTRN (Certified Transport Registered Nurse)
  • CARN (Certified Addictions Registered Nurse)
  • OCN (Oncology Certified Nurse)
  • NSCN (National Certified School Nurse)

Awards and honors in nursing credentials:

  • Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN)
  • Fellow Critical Care Medicine (FCCM)
