Library Building Open with Modifications

We have protocols for keeping our spaces and high-touch surfaces clean and for promoting health and safety in accordance with university guidelines. Access to some spaces is limited or restricted, and some services are being offered primarily or only online. Masks are required at all times. Thank you for finishing your food and drinks before entering the library.

Study Rooms:

  • Students, faculty, and staff may book study rooms for individual study for up to six hours per day.
  • Group study is not permitted at this time and new check-in procedures are in place at the main floor service desk.
  • You can schedule your study room here.

Library Materials:

  • Library materials can be delivered curbside or through home delivery.
  • Laptops and equipment can be returned or checked out in Bierce Lobby.

Brightspace Modules for Information Literacy

We currently have three courses available for Brightspace enrollment:

Library 101- this tutorial covers introductory topics such as how to get started with finding books, checking your library record, using ZipSearch, OhioLINK, and Interlibrary loan, as well as locating articles/artifacts for research. The course can be completed in about an hour. 

Library 201 (new for Spring 2021)- this tutorial contains six information literacy lessons that can be assigned together or individually. For lesson descriptions, estimated times for completion, and student learning outcomes, visit here for Bierce and here for Wayne. 

Keeping Your References and Notes Organized (new for Spring 2021)- this tutorial discusses how to choose and use a reference manager. Using a reference manager will help students organize references and notes. This course can be completed in under two hours.

Requesting Materials by Appointment

UA faculty, staff, and students can request Akron-owned library materials online and retrieve them by appointment from Bierce Library. Requestable material includes Bierce and Science & Technology Libraries’ general collections, Test Prep, Curriculum Center, and Media

  • University Library books can be requested through the library catalog: http://library.uakron.edu/.
  • Students can come to Bierce Library during operating hours and check out Technology Equipment.

The requested material can either be mailed to a home address, retrieved from Bierce Library’s lobby or by appointment curbside pickup. MediaTech items cannot be mailed. Library patrons will receive a direct email about these retrieval procedures. 

Social distancing will be strictly enforced and masks are required for visitors.

Faculty Teaching Courses

  • For faculty teaching courses, Librarians are available by appointment and the Design and Development team are available through our Keep Teaching Community in Brightspace.
  • In the Keep Teaching Community on Brightspace, you will find all recordings from our training sessions, a wide variety of handouts, a developing list of FAQs, and most important, discussion forums. Please post your questions to the Discussion forum and we will answer your question as soon as possible.
  • Equipment is available for faculty to checkout from Audio/Visual Services, located in Bierce Library.
